About Us

"Could it be possible? Are you absolutely sure? Is there any chance you're mistaken?"
The words of two weary wives upon hearing that their respective spouse had found a person with extremely similar interests and sense of humour. Weary that is from years of hearing about every second of every film. Hearing each minute detail about those films and behind the scenes trivia known to exist. Weary from pretending to be interested and saying, "that's nice dear".. It all began when a love of Laurel and Hardy prompted the beginnings of the Jitterbugs Tent in Ireland almost 20 years ago. A few film meetings into proceedings and the two rather good guys in question suddenly realised that this society dedicated to preserving the films of Stan and Ollie could actually be one of the best Tents in the world, so they made a pact to do just that. Together they put their shoulder to the wheel, best feet forward and spent the next 3 years organising the 2007 Sons of the Desert European Convention. After the experience and relief of pulling off a very successful event, they then decided to embark on a yearly visit to Comic Con in Birmingham, before it was even Comic Con!
Several more Comic Con visits and Star Wars fan days, a trip to London to visit historical sites associated with Charlie Chaplin, Hammer Horror and Dr. Who was arranged where they also took in a visit to the Victoria and Albert Childhood Museum and came face to face with Bagpuss. Over the course of all these years, useless trivia was swapped and both realised that early silent comedy was a real binding force between them. The idea was hatched to begin Ireland's very first society dedicated to all things early silent film comedy and with the Irish twists where possible. Utilising the services of their Laurel and Hardy website master, Liam and Stephen are delighted to host slapstick.ie
